Help: Recovering Tokens Sent to Element Wallet on an Unsupported Network

Sent tokens over the wrong network? We can help!

Updated over 7 months ago

Understanding Network Compatibility

When you send cryptocurrency tokens, it's crucial to understand that not all blockchain networks are the same. Think of blockchain networks like different types of phone systems or postal services. Just as you can't send a letter through the US Postal Service to an address that only exists in the UK postal system, you can't always send cryptocurrency tokens across different blockchain networks without potential issues.

Currently, Element Wallet supports these specific networks:

  • Core Network

  • Bitcoin Network

  • Tron Network

What Happens When You Send Tokens on an Unsupported Network?

If you've sent tokens to your Element Wallet using a network that isn't supported (such as Base, Arbitrum, or Optimism), your tokens won't appear in your Element Wallet. This doesn't mean your tokens are lost, but they are temporarily inaccessible within the Element Wallet.

How to Recover Your Tokens

Follow these steps to recover tokens sent to an unsupported network:

  1. Export Your Element Wallet Seed Phrase

    • Open your Element Wallet

    • Navigate to the seed phrase backup/export option in Settings

    • Carefully write down or securely export your 12-word seed phrase

  2. Use a Wallet That Supports the Network

    • Choose a wallet provider that supports the network you used to send the tokens

  3. Import Your Seed Phrase

    • Open the alternative wallet

    • Use the "Import Wallet" or "Restore Wallet" option

    • Enter your Element Wallet seed phrase

  4. Transfer Your Assets

    • Once imported, you'll see your tokens

    • You can now transfer them to your desired wallet or exchange.

🚨We recommend creating a separate wallet for recovery to protect your primary account's security. 🚨

Consider these best practices:

  • Use a different browser or browser profile

  • Use a separate mobile device

  • Create a brand new wallet account entirely separate from your main wallet

🚨Always remember to save the seed phrase of the original wallet if you plan to use the same one. 🚨

Example Scenario

Scenario: You sent USDC tokens over the Base network from Coinbase to your Element Wallet

  • Open Coinbase Wallet

  • Import your Element Wallet seed phrase

  • Your Base network USDC tokens will now be visible

  • Transfer the tokens to your preferred destination

Important Notes

  1. Always double-check the network when sending cryptocurrency

  2. Keep your seed phrase secure and private

  3. If you're unsure about a transaction, consult Element Wallet support
